Continue reading to learn more about phase 1 orthodontics and how it works.
How Phase 1 Orthodontics Works
Phase 1 orthodontics is used to accomplish three main goals:
- Correct alignment issues of the baby teeth.
- Give the adult teeth a clear path to grow in.
- Stop bad habits that inhibit proper oral development.
When you bring your child to their consultation, we will give them an exam. If we see orthodontic problems and signs that could indicate future issues, phase 1 orthodontics may be recommended. This approach takes about a year and sets the stage for your child’s adult teeth to erupt correctly.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Phase 1 Orthodontics?
Not all children need interceptive orthodontics, but many significantly benefit from it. This is what makes their consultation so important. Phase 1 orthodontics are typically recommended for children who have:
- Difficulty chewing
- Trouble speaking clearly
- Overcrowded teeth
- Spaced-out teeth
- Protruding teeth
- A disproportionate jaw
The Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics
There is a wide range of benefits that children can experience with pediatric orthodontics. Here are some of the prominent ones:
- Shorter Treatment Time: When a child undergoes phase 1 orthodontics, they usually require less orthodontic care in the long run. This helps parents and patients save time and money.
- Improved Confidence: Straightening the teeth can help children feel more confident when showing off their smiles. This can make a huge difference in their mental health as they grow up.
- Easier Function: Straightening the teeth early helps to promote proper development. This helps your children eat, speak, and smile comfortably.
Phase 1 Orthodontics FAQs
When Does Phase 1 Orthodontics Take Place?
Phase 1 orthodontics, also called interceptive orthodontics, refers to treatments that take place when the patient is between six and nine years of age. This stage is known as the mixed detention phase, meaning that the patient has a mix of baby and adult teeth. Phase 1 orthodontics allows Dr. Bygness to detect and correct disturbances in jaw growth and tooth development, and addressing these issues at an early age can make the process much easier. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child receive an orthodontic exam by the age of seven so alignment issues can be detected in their early stages. Age seven is when most children’s permanent molars will emerge, which will provide the foundation an oral health professional needs to figure out how a smile’s alignment is developing.
What Issues Can Phase 1 Orthodontics Address?
Phase 1 orthodontics can address a wide range of tooth and jaw problems in their early stages. A few common issues that can be treated include crowding, gaps, protruding teeth, and the early or late loss of baby teeth. Phase 1 orthodontic care can also address misalignments like overbites, underbites, open bites, and crossbites. Early intervention can help guide the teeth into better alignment, which can set the patient up for better oral health in the long run.
How Long Does Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment Last?
Most phase 1 orthodontic treatments will take between nine and twelve months, and the exact timeframe for the process will depend on the patient. Factors that play large roles in determining how long phase 1 orthodontics can take are the severity of the problem being treated, how well the patient complies with their treatment instructions, and the methods used to realign the teeth. The only way to receive a proper estimate for how long your child’s treatment will take is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Bygness so he can evaluate their oral health and determine the best way to address any issues. After the phase 1 orthodontic treatment is complete, your child may need to wear a retainer. Our orthodontic team in Denison will monitor your child’s growth and development so we can know when they’ll be ready for more comprehensive work.
Is It Okay for a Child to Play Sports While Wearing Braces?
It’s perfectly fine for kids to play sports while wearing braces in most cases since physical activity will not interfere with the treatment process. However, it’s best for your child to wear a mouthguard designed for braces while playing sports or riding a bike during phase 1 orthodontic treatment. If your child experiences any oral injuries, contact our office to schedule an emergency dental appointment.
