Did you know that 20% to 30% of American adults experience tooth sensitivity and pain? While age and genetics can play a factor, the acid and sugar in our diet play a crucial role as well. In fact, study after study has proven that foods and beverages that are high in these substances negatively impact the enamel on your teeth. To protect your enamel and prevent tooth sensitivity, your dentist in Denison is sharing five foods to avoid (plus, some good alternatives!).

Energy/Sports Drinks

For decades, dentists have warned people of the dangers of high-sugar beverages, like soda. However, energy and sports drinks could pose just as much danger to your oral health. In fact, one 32-ounce sports drink could contain 56 to 76 grams of sugar (roughly 14 to 19 teaspoons!). Plus, these popular beverages have a high level of citric acid. While this preserves its shelf life and flavor, it can wreak havoc on your teeth. Therefore, consider opting for a glass of water, milk, or unsweetened tea to quench your thirst!

Sour Candy

Although delicious, sour candy is jam-packed with sugar and dietary acids. Plus, their often gummy nature increases the likelihood of food particles clinging to your teeth hours after you’re done eating. This can lead to erosion of your enamel, resulting in tooth sensitivity, decay, and cavities. Instead, reach for a handful of fresh fruit when you are looking to curb your sweet tooth. Fruits like cranberries and cherries are packed with natural sugar that can also provide you the tartness you crave!

Ice Cream

Although its frigid nature makes it an obvious no for people with sensitive teeth, it is more than just the temperature that makes it a food to avoid. It also is high in sugar and can contribute to a multitude of dental issues, including tooth decay and cavities. Instead, opt for a cup of yogurt topped with some fresh fruit. The creamy consistency mimics that of ice cream, and the dairy in it strengthens the enamel on your teeth!

Wine

After a long day, it can be oh-so-tempting to pour a glass of wine to transition into a night of relaxation. However, even small quantities expose your teeth to a large number of acids that damage the enamel. Therefore, it is important to make wine a special occasion beverage over an everyday one. Instead, opt for flavored sparkling water or a sugar-free mocktail to kick-off your evening.

Soft Bread

There are few things better than freshly baked, soft, warm bread. However, your teeth would disagree. Not only are the carbohydrates in the bread broken down into simple sugars in the digestion process, but also its soft nature allows them to get trapped in between your teeth. The longer the food particles remain there, the more likely the bacteria in your mouth and sugar from the bread will combine to create acids that destroy the enamel on your teeth. Therefore, opt for bread, like sourdough, when you make a sandwich or piece of toast.

When you experience tooth sensitivity, the number one priority is to prevent the damage from getting worse. Therefore, make sure to avoid these five foods and opt for their alternatives for a pain-free, enjoyable dining experience!
